Details

Engaging with textual wisdom is a key practice in Jewish tradition. Still, sometimes it is like “what are those rabbis talking about?! Join us as we explore the tool box of text study while using contemporary song lyrics, poetry or other ‘textual wisdom’ — a real mashup of old meets new.

For October 5, our first Pop Culture Torah, we will explore the concept of home. Using song lyrics from Nina Simone’s “Baltimore,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound,” Indigo Girls’ “Come On Home,” and/or Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place,” we will explore themes of connectedness, disconnection, longing, safety and life’s meaning. Got a favorite poem or song that speaks to these? Bring it with you!

This gathering will be super low key — a time to gather with those who hear a poem or a song and want to probe its meaning, enjoy uncovering layers of significance, and, maybe, learn a bit more about how to use the tools of traditional text study.

For our October 5 session, we’ll also have the chance to decorate the sukkah!

Some nosh and a hot beverage on a Sunday morning…why not?

Feel free to “pop-in” to Pop Culture Torah. You can come to as many or as few as interest you! (But please still register in advance.)

You can register for each session individually or all three, here.

What to expect.
